Lenovo ThinkPad T400 Disassembly (Clean Cooling Fan, Remove Keyboard)

In this guide, I’ll explain how to disassemble the Lenovo ThinkPad T400 to remove and replace the hard drive, DVD drive, RAM, keyboard, palm rest, wireless card, motherboard, heat sink, and cooling fan. Refer to this guide, you can repair, upgrade and clean your ThinkPad T400.

Turn off your laptop. Unlock and remove the battery.
Remove six screws from the bottom case.

Unlock the DVD drive switch. Pull out the DVD drive.

Pry up the palm rest with your fingernails.

Disconnect the touchpad cable and remove the palm rest.

Lift up the keyboard.
Disconnect the keyboard cable from the motherboard.
Remove the Thinkpad T400 keyboard.

Remove the keyboard bezel.

Remove two screws. You can remove the speaker.

Remove five blue screws. Remove the big metal plate.
Remove three yellow screws and remove the little metal plate.
Remove three red screws securing the heat sink.

Disconnect the cooling fan cable.

The T400 cooling fan has been removed.

Remove the cooling fan from the heat sink.

Clean the cooling fan with a brush.

Apply lubricating oil to the cooling fan roller.

Clean the old glues and apply new glues on the CPU and GPU.
