Lenovo Thinkpad T420 Disassembly (Clean Cooling Fan, Remove keyboard)

In this guide, I’ll explain how to disassemble the Lenovo ThinkPad T420 to remove and replace the RAM, keyboard, palm rest, heat sink, and cooling fan. Refer to this guide, you can repair, upgrade and clean your ThinkPad T420.

Unlock and remove the battery.
Remove one screw securing the ram cover.

Under the RAM cover, you can find two RAM slots.
Remove ten screws from the bottom case.

Flip over your laptop. Lift up the keyboard and disconnect the keyboard cable. You can remove the keyboard.

Remove three screws securing the palm rest.

Pry up and lift the palm rest. Disconnect the touchpad cable from the motherboard.

Remove two screws securing the speaker.

Remove one screw.
Remove the metal plate.

Remove four screws securing the heat sink.
Disconnect the cooling fan cable from the motherboard.

Remove the cooling fan.

Clean the cooling fan with an air-blowing or hairbrush.

Apply for new glues.

  1. I desperately need to know how to remove the bottom case from my Lenovo T420. I’ve tried to figure what’s holding it to the internals but can’t figure it out. I’ve looked at every tutorial I can find it every one disassembled down to the removal of the keyboard, speakers, heat sink etc but none of them cover the removal of the bottom case to gain access to the good stuff under there. Can ANYONE tell me how to get the bottom off? Please. I’m about to trash the whole thing. But I love this laptop. Please help.
